A North Carolina teenager is in critical condition after contracting a rare and often fatal brain-eating amoeba from exposure to warm freshwater.
Health officials in North Carolina are sounding the alarm after a teenager was hospitalized in critical condition following an infection by a rare, water-borne amoeba. The organism, known scientifically as Naegleria fowleri, is typically found in warm freshwater environments such as lakes, ponds, and rivers, and is notorious for causing a devastating and often fatal condition known as Primary Amebic Meningoencephalitis (PAM).
The teenager, whose identity has not been released, reportedly came into contact with the organism while swimming in a freshwater body within the state. For those who choose to swim in warm freshwater, officials suggest keeping the head above water, using nose clips, or wearing goggles to prevent water from being forced into the nasal passages. Swimmers are also advised to avoid digging in or stirring up the sediment at the bottom of shallow, warm freshwater areas, as this is where the amoeba is most likely to reside.
It is important to note that the infection cannot be spread from person to person. Additionally, it cannot be contracted by swallowing contaminated water or by swimming in properly treated swimming pools, splash pads, or surf parks. The risk is specifically tied to the forceful entry of water into the nose from natural, untreated sources.
